Chapter Fifteen

Katherine didn’t have to think about answering the call. “Hello.” As she spoke, she headed upstairs to her bedroom. She couldn’t talk to Tom sitting next to Ryan.

“Katherine, are you all right?” The urgency in Tom’s voice surprised her.

“I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Because they’re reporting a tornado at the lake. Shelly saw it on the Internet and called me.”

“It wasn’t a tornado, it was a waterspout.” Repeating what she’d just heard the reporter say, she added, “They break up when they hit land.”

“Fine, fine, a waterspout. Whatever the hell it was, the weather sounds god-awful up there. I just checked the Internet myself. There are all sorts of storm warnings where you are.”

This wasn’t how Katherine expected their first phone call to go. “There’s no need to worry, I’m home and safe.”

“Why didn’t you call to let me know that? Christ, I thought you might be caught outside in these thunderstorms.”

“I had no idea you knew about the weather here, or that you were worried.”

“Well, I am worried about you, and it’s not just about the weather. When are you coming home?”

“I don’t know.”

“Shelly told me you’re thinking of staying all summer. Is that true?”

“I’m thinking about it. I like it here.”

“It’s not safe for you to be there alone.”

“Like I told Shelly, Mother stayed here for years by herself and nothing ever happened to her.”

“You’re not your mother.”

“I know that better than anyone.”

“If you’re serious about staying there for three months, I’d like to know why.”

“Because I need to be alone and think. I’m not happy, Tom, and I’m trying to figure out what to do about it.”

“Does that include our marriage?”

“Of course it does, and my career.”

“Your career?”

“I want to be a real photographer again.” Remembering what Ben had said, she added, “Maybe even do a book of my photographs.”

“You never told me that.”

“I didn’t know for sure until now.”

“Have you been taking pictures this week?”

“Quite a few. I’m enjoying it.”

“More than what you did here?”

“I’m enjoying it a lot more than what I did for Serapis, if that’s what you mean.” Katherine hesitated, and then blurted out, “Do you have any idea how demoralizing it was for me to be doing headshots for you? I used to be an international photographer.”

“Why did you do it if it was so damned demoralizing?”

“Because at least I had a camera in my hands again.”

“Katherine, I never stopped you from going back to work. If that’s what you want, then do it.”

“Would you publish a book of my pictures if I asked you to?”

“You know we don’t publish coffee table books.”

“That makes it sound like a coaster for your iced tea.”

“Stop being so damned touchy. You know we’ve never done oversized art books. I’d have a fight on my hands if I tried to push one through, especially for my wife.”

“All right then, with your connections, would you help me find someone who would do a book with me?”

“I could try, if that’s what you want. But you would need a theme, and the pictures would have to be good.
